Fraud Prevention

Preventing and Identifying Single-Family Home Rental Fraud

Navigating the rental market can be challenging. Staying informed and knowing how to spot the signs of fraud can ensure renters find the quality home of their dreams and can avoid common rental scams. NRHC and its members work with law enforcement, state and local officials, and regulatory agencies to help prevent fraud and protect renters and the integrity of rental listings.

Members of the NRHC are committed to educating renters on the tactics scammers may use – including modifying legitimate listings, accessing property illegally to pose as agents, or listing already leased properties to collect fees – and what renters need to know to protect themselves.

Here are some tips to help you avoid rental scams:

Verify Listings

Rental home listings should be on a rental company’s website or a reputable listing service. If a listing cannot be found on a reputable site, or the home price and details are not consistent, it may be a scam.

Compare prices

If the rent is a lot less than comparable rentals, it could be a red flag.

Proceed Cautiously

Only apply through the rental company, a licensed real estate professional or a listing website.

Take a tour

Have the listing agent schedule a tour and verify their identification. Rental agents should have photo ID badges issued by the company that owns or manages the property.

Ready to sign a lease?

Verify property management contact details from signs at the property. Call the property management company and confirm details if needed.

Never pay with cash, wire transfers or gift cards.

These are unsafe payment methods that offer no recourse if fraud is involved and are often requested by scammers.
